Human trafficking is the use of force, fraud or coercion to obtain labor or a commercial sex act.
Trafficking is a multi-billion-dollar industry and the demand isn’t going away. The roots of prostitution and trafficking are often found in severe childhood abuse, loss and/or neglect. It is these traumatic childhood experiences that push individuals (predominately children) towards homelessness, addiction, prostitution, trafficking and incarceration. (Thistle Farms, 2020).
The first few steps out of darkness and into the light of HOPE are critical. For the survivor sisters in our program, this is a time for them to rest and heal while we meet their most basic needs such as safety, food, water, clothing, and more all free of charge. We support them on their journey to sobriety and give them the tools they need for sustainability. Utilizing a holistic model, our staff work diligently with medical professionals such as primary care physicians, dentists, optometrist, and mental health care to heal the body, brain, and spirit.
With a newfound HOPE, our survivor sisters are building a strong, safe, secure foundation with the support of a caring community. It is in this stage the transformation can began. Survivor sisters work with staff to create an individualized plan for life skills, education, vocation, and job readiness training. For a long time, choice was ripped away from each of our survivor sisters. In this stage they are encouraged to try new ideas, activities, and experiences that will mold them into the women they choose to be.
Dignity found, story rewritten, from a survivor to a thriver. With a soft launch our survivor sisters take gradual steps towards independence. Utilizing the skills and resources accumulated over the course of the program, they are working full time earning a livable wage. We encourage sisters to become leaders in the home as well as in the community.
The Value of a Life
At Hope Against Trafficking, we believe all lives are valuable and everything possible should be done to assist survivors, most of who have been abused throughout their childhood, to heal and grow.
